RE: Louvered Tailgate Recommendations???

I've had a Handy for 5 years on 2 different trucks, no problems or rust of any kind. Highly recommended.

RE: Canadian Maritimes

Thanks for the quick response Barry, no we're not planning on staying at KOA's, the one here in T Bay is pretty nice and the closest to family we are visiting as we pass through,

Canadian Maritimes

Hi, we are in Thunder Bay enroute to the East coast including the Gaspe Penninsula and are wondering if we need reservations at the various Campgrounds and RV parks along the way.
The Thunder Bay KOA is fairly busy, but right now no reservations are needed to get a decent site.
We made several reservations to here after leaving home, and found that not once did we actually need them.
Thanks in advance

RE: Baja Road Trip

Concur with everything Peter said. Safety was never a concern. Common sense as usual of course. This year we are doing the same kind of thing on the mainland but travelling by ourselves. Sure had a lot of fun with the group though. Spent a total of about 3 months down there but only about 12 days with the group. We went down with Baja Winters
Peter, which company did you guys go down with.
Hi John and Angela, hi from Kamloops, we went with Adventure Caravans on their Twin Piggybacks 42 day tour. Unfortunately the Mexican government changed the rules since, and part of the trip has been cancelled.

RE: Baja Road Trip

Hi, we did Baja last Jan-Feb in a caravan. No one in 19 rigs had any problems including 43ft DP's with toads on the highway. Yes Mex 1 is narrow and often no shoulders, parts are twisty and steep going up and down.
We stopped several times for a couple of days, but it's 1000 miles one way, so figure 250-300 miles a day, without many stops, and night driving is not recommended.
Being in a group of 38 people with many already experienced in Mexico, we personally never felt unsafe or insecure.
Fuel is absolutely no problem, 99% of Pemex stations (they are all Pemex IIRC) only accept cash in pesos only, just make sure they "zero" the meter before pumping gas/diesel. One thing to be aware of are "topes"...speed bumps (some are big and several in a row) which are in every town or village and some intersections, Do slow down or you will damage your rig on some of them, and most, but not all are marked.
If you are behind a vehicle on the open highway and the left turn signal comes on, it means its safe to pass. Strange I know.
If oncoming traffic flash their headlights, slow down, theres a problem ahead which could be anything. There are several military checkpoints on Mex 1 and very few of them speak English.
I'm sure others with much more experience than I have in Mexico will add a lot more info for you.
Would we do it again? Yes

RE: Seneca 36 fs... refrigerator run on house (15 amp) plug

Hi, just like the other posters said, and don't worry about using too much propane for the fridge, a 30lb tank will last months if used just for the fridge.
We have been on the road for 5 weeks now, and still on the 1st tank, using propane for most of the cooking and the odd morning the furnace to take the chill out of the fiver, though we use electricity most but not every night. Yes, I know it's July! A very cool spring/early summer here in Canada this year.
Enjoy your trip!

RE: 2wd or 4wd?

Hi, it mostly depends where you live. Here where I live, I need 4WD to get out before the snow plows come around, and like others have said, I used it to park in wet grass or muddy spots when I had to.
I grew up in snow country and fish and photograph the back country and every truck I've owned has been a 4X4.
It really helped the one time we were caught in a snowstorm towing the fiver and there was no place to pull over for about 5 miles, though I don't recommend towing in snow!

RE: Too Buy or Not Too Buy

Hi, when I had a TC, I had a 5X8 trailer, not very high but I could get everything inside. I had the tongue extended 18" and put my 12ft boat on top, bow to the front. Yes it hung out at the back but not as much as you think, only 2ft each end, or move it a little if you have to. Put a red indicator on the back of some kind.
7 weeks is a fair amount of time, and well worth the extras you want to take with you. If it was a 1 week trip, that's another story.
Just curios, but where in BC are you going?

RE: Why RV Tires Suffer So Many Blowouts

Hi, I tend to agree with you on most of your points. Yes some cheaper tires have more problems than others, but the more expensive ones can also fail for the same reasons you gave. Overloaded, underinflated, too old and going faster than the recommended max speed is asking for trouble no matter who or where the tires are made.
Recommended max speed for my Marathons is 65MPH.

RE: Chevy Guys, Towing in OD?

I put mine in Tow/Haul mode and let the Ally do the shifting, especially in hilly/mountain country.

RE: What are you towing with and what is your MPG

Hi, I have an '06 Dmax/Allison 2500 and a 10,000lb GVW fiver, average mileage towing is 12 American, roughly 14.4 Imperial. Canadian gallons are 4.5 liters, American 3.8, about a 20% difference without getting into the .000+/- thing

RE: How often do you check lug nut tightness?

I have aluminum wheels (I know, kinda dumb on a trailer, but that's what came on it!) and check about every 3-4 days on a long trip. Keep a torque wrench set at 140#, and very occassionally notice they're not quite up to spec, but have never found one "loose" either.
I think every 100 miles is prolly overkill but don't ignore them either.
Hi, it sounds like you have a "dial" type of torque wrench that clicks at the setting you dial to? To keep it accurate I suggest you dial it back to "zero" after torquing as they can become inaccurate if kept dialed up.

Glad to hear you had a great trip without any problems, it sure makes RV'ing much more enjoyable. We lived on the Island for years as well.....loved it there.

RE: TV Tire Pressure While Towing

Inflating your tires to sidewall maximum while towing will increase fuel mileage slightly, it will greatly improve handling while towing.
To a point, IMHO overinflating tires for the load on them (not over tire max) will wear out the center of the tread and not necessarily improve handling much if at all, especially in heavy rain where they tend to hydroplane.

RE: How many days from Banff to Fairbanks w/out Stops?

Driving at night be very aware of deer, moose, caribou and other animals on, or crossing the road. Also, some sections of the Alaska Hwy are very rough and under ongoing construction, so be ready for some slow going and construction delays, and, you will miss some of the more scenic areas if you drive a lot through the night.
Going to Fairbanks via Top of the World Hwy, is much, much longer than staying on the Alaska Hwy

RE: RVs for winter living

Not sure if these are made out east but the General Coach lines, Corsair Excella and Citation Supreme, are 4 season rv's.
They are solid units, but heavy. Our 26RKS has a dry weight of 8,900#. Overall length is 27' 5". This is their small unit.
General Coach is owned by Thor.
Their Polar Pak is guaranteed to -30c about -22f and warranted for full time use.

RE: Has rise in gas prices caused you to decrease your camping?

Hi, we planned our very soon upcoming cross Canada and N/E USA trip a year and a half ago. I figured that eating in fewer restaurants, if any (the fiver has a perfectly good kitchen!) and slowing to 55-60 MPH will make up the difference in fuel costs.

RE: Using 30 amp service on a 50 amp Fifth Wheel

Hi, my fiver is 50amp, and using one A/C on 30 amp is fine, even using the M/W at the same time, just make sure you have the 30amp male/50amp female adapter.

RE: Cracker Barrel Overnight

A lot of places that have long RV parking spots are taken up by single cars/trucks which are parked right in the middle, and the rest of the lot is almost empty....blind ignorance if you ask me, or just too lazy to walk another 50 feet, yet, do you ever notice the dirty looks or comments if we park our rigs in the main parking lot?
Just a thought.
